Summer Reading

Summer Reading Assignments by Course

Each summer, the SWHS English Language Arts department provides students with a reading assignment. The purpose of summer reading is to engage in ongoing reading and learning, and to develop a culture of literacy in our community. Click on your fall course (Arrow) to view the corresponding assignment. These assignments provide suggested texts to read in addition to focus questions or activities to help drive understanding and to help facilitate conversations at the start of the year.

Additional Summer Reading Recommendations

Just as athletes need to stay in shape during the off-season, reading throughout the summer is meant to “keep you in shape”. Research supports that wide reading promotes academic success across all content areas. South Windsor High School is a community that values and celebrates literacy, so we encourage you to read several texts throughout the summer. This year, the SWHS staff have contributed to text recommendations that are highlighted below. You may also be interested in reading the 2020 Nutmeg High School Nominees found here.
