Safe Routes to School Infrastructure Grant
South Windsor has a proposed project for safety improvements on campus and within the vicinity of Orchard Hill Elementary School and Eli Terry Elementary School. The project is in the concept stage and may be recommended for design and construction under the Safe Routes to School Program administered by the Connecticut Department of Transportation if this project is supported by the community and town of South Windsor officials.
The proposed project plan includes crosswalks, sidewalks, pathways, handicap ramps and signage which will improve the safety for children walking and bicycling to and from school. Based upon a preliminary assessment, the combined construction cost will be approximately $806,000 for the Eli Terry and Orchard Hill project improvements. It is anticipated that the Federal Highway Administration will provide 100% of the construction cost up to a maximum limit as determined by the Federal Highway Administration.
It is the policy of the town of South Windsor and the State of Connecticut to keep persons informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share its concerns to assist in the project's development. The town of South Windsor will conduct an informational meeting on March 31, 2010, 7 p.m., Timothy Edwards Middle School, ALT 6 classroom.
