Personal Learning Plan

Naviance is an online tool for students to plan, organize, track, research and reflect upon goals and achievements throughout high school. Students store this information in their individual electronic Naviance accounts. Sophomores will update their student resume and begin to research the academic criteria for a variety of careers and admission to various post secondary programs using Naviance. They will also create an academic plan for the remainder of their high school years. The plan includes courses required for graduation as well as those required for their intended post secondary goal.

Testing Information

  • In October all sophomores take the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) and receive feedback about their academic readiness for college in the areas of critical reading, math and writing.
  • During March of their sophomore year, all students take the state required assessments (Connecticut Academic Performance Tests -CAPT) which are required for graduation.
  • Other optional tests for sophomores include SAT subject tests and Advanced Placement Tests. School Counselors and teachers can help students determine their readiness to complete these tests successfully.

College Fair

The college fair is hosted in the fall by the School Counseling department of South Windsor High School. The event, held at the high school, draws 100+ colleges and technical schools. Students have the opportunity to gather information about prospective colleges and to speak with admissions representatives about entrance criteria and educational opportunities beyond high school.   Parents are also welcome to attend the college fair.

Individual Meetings with Counselors/Academic Advisement and Course Selection

  • Individual conferences are held with each sophomore to begin developing a relationship between the school counselor and the student. Students and parents may also initiate appointments to discuss academic, career and personal issues as needed.
  • During the second semester, annual individual meetings are held to review each student’s academic progress, to explain and answer any questions regarding course selection, and to ensure students are taking the proper credits toward graduation.

Academic Success Strategies

Strategies are embedded in the school schedule throughout the school year for students who demonstrate a specific need. These are available through:

  • Literacy Lab
  • Math Lab
  • Homework Club
  • IEP transition services
  • IEP academic support
  • 504 Disability Accommodations
  • Counseling Services

Physical Education II/Health 10

These are required tenth grade courses that focus on health-related fitness, skill development for mental and physical wellness, social skills, self discipline, and decision making.

Parent Programs

  • AP/ECE Information Night ~ an informational evening for families to explore SWHS curriculum offerings that potentially provide college credit while attending high school. (Advanced Placement Courses, UCONN Early College Experience Courses, and Partnership Programs with local Community Colleges)
  • Sophomore Parent Night ~ an evening program for parents/guardians of sophomores to begin to explore post secondary information and readiness. Parents will also be invited to open a parent account on Naviance so that they have access to a wide variety of resources to help their child plan and prepare for life beyond high school.
